When You Have Extra Time

Here are a few ideas if you have extra time. Remember, the goal in your time with God is not to try to “accomplish” a long list of activities. The goal is to abide in Christ, engage whole-heartedly with God in prayer, and meditate on His Word.

Praise — Grab a hymnal or songbook, sing a few songs that express something that is on your heart or mind.

Look — Sit or walk outside and thank and praise God for the beautiful things He has made. Intentionally slow down and observe— what do you see, smell, hear, or feel that reflects the goodness and beauty of God?

Write —  Take some time to journal about your experience of getting alone with God.

Read — Read a chapter from a devotional book. Take time to pray and reflect on it.

Pray — Reflect on one of the prayers or quotes in this book. Ponder what these brothers and sisters in Christ are trying to say. Use these to launch you into prayer.Be Still — Sit for a few minutes and be still. Walking with Christ does not mean constant, frantic activity. The Bible has much to say about being still, being silent, waiting on the Lord, resting, hoping in the Lord, abiding in Christ. “Be still and know that I am God…”
