Active Praise

In these activities, we use our actions and posture of our bodies in order to help us dwell on God’s beauty and express praise to him. Choose one of the following activities to physically express your love and thanks.

Walking with Awe and Thanks

You are a glorious creator and provider

Choose a psalm and read it through once or twice. Take a copy of it with you on a walk. As you walk, meditate on God’s Word and intentionally look for the beauty and wonder of the things that God has made. As you go, pray and praise God for what he has made and how he sustains all of his creation. Optionally, afterward you can record this praise through a written prayer or through artistic expression.

8 – God’s majesty, mankind’s honored role in creation
O Lord, our Lord,
how majestic is your name in all the earth!

19 – Creation, Scripture declare the glory of God
The heavens declare the glory of God…
The law of the Lord is perfect

29 – The mighty voice of God
The voice of the Lord is powerful;
the voice of the Lord is full of majesty.

65 – God satisfies with bountiful provision
You make the going out of the morning
and the evening to shout for joy.

104 – God’s strong and intimate care for all his creation
From your lofty abode you water the mountains;
the earth is satisfied with the fruit of your work

Resting on the Rock

I confidently look to you, my hope is in you

Meditate on one of the psalms below. Consider especially how God is your unshakable refuge and hope. Take some time to rest in this reality – you could sit in a beautiful place or go for a relaxed walk. Rest your heart and your life in the Lord. Talk to him, thank him, and confidently hope in him. Don’t rush, the goal of this time is not to produce something, but to hope in the Lord and look to him with love and confidence. Afterward, if helpful, you can take some time to journal or to write a written prayer.

62 – Our mighty rock and salvation in trouble
He only is my rock and my salvation, my fortress;
I shall not be shaken.

63 – God our help and deep satisfaction
Oh God, you are my God; earnestly I seek you

91 – Unshakable deliverance and refuge in God Almighty
He who dwells in the shelter of the most high
will abide in the shadow of the Almighty.

108 – God’s love for his people and power over all enemies
My heart is steadfast, oh God!
I will sing and make melody with all my being!

121 – The Lord keeps his people from evil
My help comes from the Lord,
who made heaven and earth.

Bow Before Him, All the Earth

You are majestic king over all

Using one of these psalms, meditate on the glory, power, and sovereignty of the Lord. Where does his rule and kingship strike you and impact your life, or the lives of others? Write a prayer, poem, or song that expresses love and confidence in your good king, and rejoices in his rule over all. As you think about rejoicing in God as King, what physical posture(s) reflect these realities? Assume a physical posture with your body that expresses your love and surrender to God as King. In this posture, read your prayer, poem, or song out loud as an act of worship.

24 – Godly life honors the King of glory
Who is this King of glory?
The Lord of hosts, he is the King of glory!

45 – A love song to Christ as King
Your throne, O God, is forever and ever.

47 – Praise God as King over all the earth
For God is the King of all the earth;
sing praises with a psalm!

93 – The majestic rule and power of God
The Lord reigns; he is robed in majesty.

99 – God as just King who answers his people
The King in his might loves justice.
