Sitting with a Text

You may find it helpful to read the chapter Intro to Scripture Meditation before trying any of the Scripture meditation activities.

This activity works well with almost any type of scripture passage. Generally, a passage of 1 to 10 verses is recommended. Longer passages can work, but it may be more helpful to break longer passages into parts, and meditate on them one section at a time. Choose a short passage of Scripture and use the following steps as a guide for meditating on God’s Word. Remember, don’t rush—slowly go through each step, taking as much time as you need.

Silence

Sit in a comfortable position and take a few minutes to be still and silent—this can help prepare our minds and hearts to listen to God’s Word. It may be helpful to close your eyes during this time. Commit any anxieties or distractions to God, and seek to rest in Him, knowing that He is with you. A short prayer or verse can sometimes help us set our minds on things above, and calm and quiet our souls.

Example verses:
“For God alone, O my soul, wait in silence, for my hope is from him.” Psalm 62:5
“Be still and know that I am God.” Psalm 46:10

Reading

Turn to the text and read it out loud slowly and gently several times (try 3 times). Don’t rush. What words, phrases, ideas, or images strike you or evoke a response in your mind or heart?

Meditation

Dwell on the passage. In this, seek to fully engage both your mind and your heart. How does this passage interact with your thoughts, feelings, concerns, memories, ideas, and emotions? When distractions come, offer them to God and return to the passage.

Praying

Offer the internalized passage back to God—whether it’s adoration, confession, renewal, petition, intercession, or thanks. Interact with God as your generous Father who desires to use His Word for good in the hearts of every one of His children.

Silence

Finish with a few moments of stillness and silence before God.

After you finish meditating on the passage, take some time to journal about the impact His Word has had on your mind and heart.

Alternate Format

Try going back and forth between reading, meditating, and praying. First, read through the passage once slowly and then go on to spend some time in the meditation and prayer steps. When you’re ready, go back and go through the Reading, Meditation, and Prayer steps again. Repeat this cycle 2-4 times.
