Next Steps After Confession

As we are convicted of sin, confess, and repent, God calls us on to healing, reconciliation, fellowship, and hope. After a time of self-examination and confession, prayerfully process through and consider these follow-up steps.

Putting on Christ

God calls us to intentionally put to death sin in our lives and put on Christ’s ways and character (see Colossians 3).

What do you feel God is calling you to do in the future to purposefully walk in His ways? Pray for God’s guidance and empowering for this work.

Pursuing Reconciliation

As you confess sin, are there steps that you need to take to reconcile and make amends with others? Take time now to read Matthew 5:23-24 and Romans 12:18.

Confessing with Others

“Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working.” James 5:16

There is great value and healing in not only confessing individually to God, but also to another brother or sister in Christ. Is there a trustworthy, gracious brother or sister in Christ you could talk to and confess the sins you have written down? When will you contact them?

Living in the Gospel

As you examine yourself, seeing your failings and sin, look all the more to Jesus and put all of your hope in Him. Satan may seek to use this opportunity to accuse you, condemn you, or shame you. In these times, reject the lies and meditate on the marvelous and finished work of Jesus. All who are in Christ are blameless, spotless, righteous, dearly loved, and complete forever in Him. Nothing can separate us from the steadfast love of God in Christ.

There are many passages that confront the condemning, accusing lies of Satan. A few possibilities are:

Romans 6:1-11
Romans 8
Ephesians 2:1-10
Colossians 2:8-15
Hebrews 9:11-14
Hebrews 10:14-25
1 John 1:9
